The only shift lately is that I've also been much more active in social networking sites, specifically Twitter and Facebook.

Now, both Twitter and Facebook are essentially social networking systems. They are about forming and building connections between people, rather than publishing content. So, that shouldn't have an impact on my posts here.

The only thing I can think of is some kind of defusing effect that activity on social networking sites may have - I post there, and it satisfies the social component of posting here. Posting here doesn't affect posting there.

Blogging is (for me) about personal knowledge management. Capturing the content and context of what I'm doing. Social networking is about context more than anything. Which looks at first blush to be purely banality. And yet, it affects me on a deeper level.

I was in Vancouver for an "eCOP" pathfinding meeting, and found that I flipped open the MacBookPro during breaks. What did I check first? It wasn't email. It wasn't my blog (or blog stats, or blog referrals). It was Twitter. I felt more connected to my distributed community of edubloggers (and others) because they're always there with me, no matter where I am. That's powerful stuff. Now, how to better make sense of that? Or does making sense of it suck the soul out of it?�

Until last week, I hadn't heard of Twitter. Then Cole blogged about it, and the ETSTalk Podcast folks talked about it. They're looking at Twitter as a tool to facilitate shared awareness of organizational activities.

Twitter is essentially nanoblogging (I just made that word up) - stuff that is more of a quick "I'm doing this right now" kind of status update rather than a blog post. You create a set of "friends" and get to see updates in almost realtime of what they're up to. Right now.

Cole's investigating this from the perspective of "how would a tool like this affect teaching and learning, and running an organization" I'm not doing anything quite so lofty, I'm just playing.

What's kind of cool is that it makes it easy for me to track what I'm doing, so when it's time to do the Dreaded Procrastinated Timesheet Entry mere hours before the payroll cutoff, I could just spider the list of archived updates.

I'm not sure if there's any value in Twitter per se. Other tools have been doing this, from full-on blogs to tools like Facebook and MySpace. Do we really need a separate tool for this? Maybe it's a good thing because it's so tightly focussed...

The design of Twitter might be a bit overly simplified though. There's no way to define the audience for an update, although you can set a global flag that affects all of your updates. It'd be handy to have a private/friends/public distinction, so I could track stuff that nobody cares about, only my Friends, or everyone else. Also, the ability to tag updates, either as categories/keywords, or even with contexts ala GTD, would be handy, along with an interface to filter by tags (show me all things done @Work wih the tag "drupal" in the last 2 weeks) 

Regardless, I'm dnorman on twitter. Like that's the first time I've been called a twit.

Twapper lets you monitor Twitter feeds from your phone's browser--a nice alternative to constant SMS alerts.

In case the name doesn't ring a bell, Twitter lets you keep track of other people's whereabouts and broadcast your own. However, if you use your phone to receive Twitter updates, you end up with a potential deluge of text messages. Twapper, designed for mobile browsers, lets you view (and bookmark) the messages from any Twitter user. You can't post your own Twitter messages, but it's a good bet that function will be coming soon. Well, so I did see Robert Scoble at the podtech Vloggies booth; that was fun. He has so many folks wanting to talk to him, and he's representing his startup, so I hate to take too much of his time at these things. I did manage to congrat on the fact he and Maryam are expecting, and to hand Irina a QnA t-shirt as a howdy gesture for commenting on my blog recently. I did see the video of her shooting at a range, and frankly if you didn't respect her before you might try working on it now. ;-)

Being part of the "twitter sxsw" phenomenon as it evolved has been pretty interesting. First, it makes this event more fun, and largely because Scoble's so generous with his followers that you get to follow the antics of the technorati by following him. It also is a high-powered PDA/phone app though, which because I am on a dinosaur Nokia from beyond Lost Time isn't as relevant for me. I'm reading twitter on my tablet and via Twapper rather than a mobile sized bite of it.

On the other hand, for Evan and crew at Twitter, sxsw is the perfect launch pad for folks to try it out. The conference is young, hip and as mentioned, Scoble's been so inclusive it's not hard to feel part of a large flock(?) twittering on. It's an event where moment by moment stuff changes, and where you have rest breaks where you can bring people up to date.

For example, Molly Wright Steenson of girlwonder.com wrote she'd twitter from the stage asking Dan Rather a question. I wasn't in that seminar, and the next thing that pops up is something like "dan rather is 75 years old. damn. "

And yet at conferences some of the more inspiring moments are face to face.  I first met Molly at the Microsoft Research Social Computing Symposium last year . Her brain is awesome & intense & never stops; found out at sxsw she just got into a doctorate program at Princeton. (Nice!) Chatting at the Blind Pig Bar Saturday with Mary Hodder of dabble.com about what it takes to break off and start a company.  The small thank yous for the panel on Saturday which I appreciate and the folks who said  "yes, I'll take a t-shirt from you" at the Platinum Lounge party Microsoft sponsored yesterday (Sunday). I'm by nature a shy person (haha on me that I ended up working the community side of the internet) but we tend to remember the small human moments that matter.

 Matt Mullenweg (founder of Wordpress) had a great quote from his presentation on scaling community today: "Speed is a feature"  He said this as, with great personal irony to me,  the convention center's wireless was conking out on me, sending 3 packets for every 1 received and making everything load so slow as to be unusable.  Matt said other good things too, about how you start building in community success from the beginning. He made a big deal about Caterina Fake greeting and recommending things to every Flickr user before they had tagging; what powerful resonance and loyalty that creates! Speed to user is as important as page load times.

Tonight's my spoken word experience - 20x2. More on that later...gotta go see "When communities attack!" panel....

Might be a job for the cod. ;)

The techies, bloggers, and various citezenry-of-media are pumping the service with constant web, IM and SMS messages. Twitter staffers Jack and Alex tell me that the site, which normally carries around 20 thousand messages a day, broke 60 thousand a day this weekend. This traffic boost should add a strong layer of new permanent users. In the next year, Twitter could make a Facebook-sized blowup among the general public. -- NICK DOUGLAS

Twitter has been spreading like wildfire of late, and it seems as if everyone from the tech elite to the tech illiterate have signed on to post snippets from places blogging had previously yet to tread. Is Twitter's growth sustainable? Maybe; As the A-list trumpet Twitter's success, web1979 makes a pretty convincing argument for why Twitter isn't going to last the year.

Mat Belez writes, "There is no substance to the house of cards that is Twitter. No deep content, nothing to learn, no reason to keep coming back to the trough, other than the thrill/obsession of pre-adolescent voyeurism - which is simply not reason enough for busy professionals."

Is Twitter a case of becoming web-cool simply because all the cool kids are doing it? Although I've recently succumbed to the Twitter bug, I'm still unsure why I do it. , when an early adopter friend told me about Twitter last summer, my first question was, "Why would you want to do that?"
