Keeping things fresh in its TeraStation lineup, Buffalo is dropping three new NAS units touting up to two terabytes of capacity and faster access speeds than previous models. Besides sporting the obligatory RAID 0/1/5 functionality (and looking exactly like its predecessor), the TeraStation Pro TS-HTGL/R5 series holds four hard drives behind a lockable door, gigabit Ethernet, and a snazzy LCD panel to show internal temperature and worrisome alerts. Slated to be available in 1.0, 1.6, and 2.0TB flavors, the units will also support "ActiveDirectory domain," which apparently pulls double duty as a security gate to ward off curious intruders and a data divisor based on group / role login preferences. Although pricing deets are currently unavailable, the trio will be getting NASty (read: shipping) in early December.

It's still the same ol' box -- RAID 1/5/10 (across 4x disks), 38MB/s transfer rate (Raid 5), gigabit Ethernet, Active Directory integration, integrated UPS and 2x USB 2.0 jacks to swing even more disk from. And with 1TB drives ready to pop, a 4TB model is just around the corner. The TS-H3.0TGL/R5 is already up for pre-order in Japan for ¥277,305 or about $2,312 of the green after you hunt the beast down. NASty indeed.

Buffalo rolls out with yet another NAS product, only this time they insist that it belongs in your home. TeraStation Living, available as a 1TB or 2TB model, supports DNLA and works with the Buffalo Video LinkTheater suite to sync up with all your media electronics and also stores TV shows, videos (DivX or WMV), photos, and music. TeraStation will be made available in March with projected prices of ¥106,300 (about $896) for the 1TB unit and ¥178,900 (about $1,510) for the 2TB unit. While we can all agree that TeraStation Living's functional configurations are great for "living," some of their commercially-targeted models would look a whole lot nicer in the home.

Not so long ago, I went on the lookout for a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive that I could use with my Mac and my PC.

This proved a little bit more awkward than I expected because many NAS drives only supported Macs by allowing you to format the disk in FAT32. This is all very well until you want to put files larger than 4GB on there, such as disk images.

I eventually settled on the LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini. This product uses the XFS file system, which has a maximum file size of 8 exabytes (should be enough!). It supports connections from Windows, Apple, HTTP and FTP. It lets you define shares and users, and even allows you to connect another USB disk for backups or extra storage.

Works a treat with both my PC and my Mac. Definitely recommended.

Don't fancy picking up a fully configured NAS with a bunch of off-the-shelf drives? Well then, Synology's Cube Station CS407 might be the NAS for you. Coming bare bones with four slots for SATA hard disk drives of your choice, the CS407 includes out of the box support for iTunes serving, a PhotoStation2 image hosting service, and PHP and MySQL support. It has a Gigabit Ethernet port, low power consumption, quiet operation, and came out OK in the performance tests that Hot Hardware carried out. The CS407 ain't perfect though, with its slightly dodgy build quality, standard rack mounts for Hard Drives, and slightly dear price tag of around $649.
