我以前实验过很多Linux分版,也经历过很多次失败,比如安装Linux不当导致硬盘分区丢失等等.虽然我现在还不能说是高手,但已经可以熟练应用Linux了. 如果按照使用的时间排序,

• 1999-2000 (完全不知如何应用)
  • BluePoint （现在在网上还能找到它的地址，但已经打不开了，http://bluepoint.com.cn/）
  • Lindows（国外有一个商业Linux发行版，也叫Lindows，做的相当不错，现在改名叫Linspire了）
  • RedFlag 3.0
  • Mandrake 8.0 是我买的一套正版,还送了一套字处理软件,可惜好像被我扔了,这是当时唯一用起来比较舒服的分版,可惜当时不能上网,很多软件都没有,所以最后还是放弃了
  • RedHat 7.0
• 2002-2004上 (开始熟练应用Linux)
  RedHat 9.0 有友好的安装界面,已经相当易用,当时同学买了一套正版,很多人都使用
  • VMWare WorkStation,虽然不是Linux,但不得不提,因为这个软件,使得我们不用重启就可以在Windows和Linux之间切换,而且在虚拟机的环境中实验Linux更加安全
• 2004下 至今 (完全适应使用Linux进行开发作业,而且可以完全抛弃商业软件使用开源软件)
  • Fedora Core 2,3,4 Fedora Core系列一直都是我十分喜欢使用的,
  • Ubuntu Linux (Linux for human beings)秉承了Debian的丰富的软件包,容易使用,易用扩展,缺点是速度慢(不知道为什么)
  • Gentoo Linux 直接从源码进行构建,提供极大的自定义空间,也能更好地为自给的机器进行优化,可惜不适合初学者,我当时学习Gentoo的时候,安装编译整个系统花了好几天时间
  • Mandrake 2005 Mandrake也提供了很好的界面,提供和KDE更好的集成,现在是和Connectiva合并为Mandriva了
  • Arch Linux 是针对i686优化的分版,十分简洁,系统的一些机制也很简单(简陋?)可惜安装并不容易,缺乏文档支持,并不如Gentoo好

现在我很期待Fedora Core 5的发布,因为他有很多振奋人心的特性,内核是针对i686优化的,使用了Gnome 2.12(界面效果更好),一些控件加入了动画特效,如淡入淡出,窗体的显示也可以与Windows媲美

而且加入了最近的FreeType,已经可以进行仿粗体的渲染,以前使用Linux经常头疼如何配置中文字体粗体、斜体的问题，都已经得到了解决了，同时直接提供了SCIM作为输入法基础，这是迎和广大宽字符集用户需求的。其他的新我，比如使用GCC4.4，并集成了ECLIPSE 3.1的支持。

据说开发小组打算把所有的包都针对i686优化,如果那样,真是不得了。

Since I upgraded to Typo 4.0, and in the process rails 1.1.6 I have had a few occurrences where nanoRAILS would hang, several bloated processes would be sitting there and not respond, and the only option at that point was to kill all ruby processes once I realized what was happening, which could be several hours. Suffice it to say, this is not a good option.

So after struggling during last rails upgrade to 1.1 on my host, the next logical step is to also use my own version of ruby so I can have better control on its environment, and even apply patches if necessary.

The following steps apply on a lot of systems. More specifically, my host is DreamHost (aff), and as best I can tell, I’m on a host with Debian Sarge.

Build your own Ruby

Download ruby from http://www.ruby-lang.org. The latest version is currently ftp://ftp.ruby-lang.org/pub/ruby/ruby-1.8.4.tar.gz

Create the makefile using

 ./configure prefix=[YOUR_OWN_RUBY_PREFIX]

Since you most likely don’t have root access, you need to override where ruby think it resides, and the way to do that is to set the prefix to somewhere into your home directory. Something like /home/USERNAME/ruby for example. From that point on, libraries, other builtin ruby files, gems will automatically install into your own ruby repository so you never have to worry about getting in trouble with an unforeseen upgrade.

Optionally, you can apply the patch used by Railsbench, with hardcoded default values because I haven’t figured how to set the environment variables for the dispatch.fcgi process (since apache in my case determines that). Download my version of rubygc.patch .

 patch gc.c rubygc.patch

Build and install ruby

 make
 make install

Additionally, so that the command line uses the same version of ruby, add this to your .bashrc or equivalent for your shel.

export PATH=[YOUR_OWN_RUBY_PREFIX]/bin:$PATH

Install your own gems

Now you are ready to install your own gems. Here’s the bare minimum you need.

First, install rubygems

 wget http://rubyforge.org/frs/download.php/11289/rubygems-0.9.0.tgz
 tar xzvf rubygems-0.9.0.tgz
 cd rubygems-0.9.0
 ruby setup.rb

Then install the minimum set of gems:

 gem install mysql

Now, the only thing you need is to change the path to ruby in your dispatch file (dispatch.rb for mod_cgi, dispatch.cgi for regular cgi, and dispatch.fcgi for FastCGI/fcgid)

I feel violated. My home network has this nasty new device hooked up to it that I really, really like: Control 4 Home Automation System. I get as many remotes as I want and they all work over my wireless network and pretty much can control everything in the house from the iPod, lights, radio, t.v., etc. It's really freaking cool.

Yesterday when it was being installed I noticed the technicians were using their laptops to configure everything from their Windows XP laptops. So being the geek I am I start asking how things work and that's when they broke the bad news to me, "Sure, see that small box right there? It's a Linux server that is running all the home automation."

They even told me that I can login from anywhere on the Internet and "run my house". Scary, can't wait to see what the viruses for these systems are going to look like. Imagine what could be done if your home automation system got hacked!

Great, not only do I have something I don't trust hooked up to my network it's responsible for all my geek joy; and to make matters worse, it's easy to use and I really, really like it.

Firefox的性能问题困扰我很久了，从Ubuntu Breezy开始就很奇怪。过去我曾经使用Ubuntu Breezy的时候，发现Firefox在Tab之间切换十分慢，JavaScript脚本的执行也很慢。
后来公司机器有空余（是一台Athlon64的），我就安装了一个Fedora Core 5 x86_64版，但情况也很糟糕。后来安装了Ubuntu Dapper amd64，起初觉得还挺快，后来就越来越慢了，于是我猜测是扩展和插件的问题，因为Ubuntu会给Firefox安装很多语言支持，而这些支持都是以扩展的形式安装在Firefox中的，于是我在Firefox将所有的语言支持扩展都禁用掉了，重启，才感觉性能上有所提升，但还是无法达到Windows下的效果。
而另外一个问题是，我在Windows上的VMWare中安装的Ubuntu Dapper i386的版本中的Firefox速度却相当快，难道是因为Firefox在x86_64架构下有性能问题？

续上一篇之 后，我又尝试了一下Firefox的大哥Mozilla，突然发现果然流畅很多，虽然Mozilla少了很多功能，比如扩展和主题，但是性能上的提升是值 得的。Firefox由于扩展、主题都是基于JavaScript和XML的甚至是基于RDF的，而这两者对于性能的影响还是很大的。
话又说回来，我在Windows上虽然感觉Firefox并不慢，但当运行久了之后，也会出现和Linux下一样的情况，而且我总是使用标签页进行浏览， 似乎这样情况更加严重，也许是Firefox还存在某些内存泄露的问题——导致我现在又开始使用Opera了，不过Opera也没有x86 64版本的。

最近天气逐渐转凉，转眼就到深秋季节了，正是丰收的时节，接连几项重要软件的发布，Internet Explore 7.0、Fedora Core 6、Firefox 2.0，包括今天发现Ubuntu Linux也发布了最新的正式版6.10 Edgy Eft

而我也还有一些其他的，在酝酿之中……

上次说我用了一个奇怪的办法安装了Ubuntu Dapper，现在Ubuntu Edgy Eft发布了，就赶紧升级，直接在命令行下输入“gksu “update-manager -c -d””，然后点击“升级到6.10“，然后就开始了漫长的升级过程……
估计是发布之后大家都立即跟进，有很多的人在下载更新，我下载的速度只有几K，整整下载了2天才搞定……
新版的Ubuntu Edgy Eft最大的优点我觉得是使用了Firefox 2.0，浏览上不再那么卡了～

 

Surely you have heard by now, yesterday the unthinkable happened.

There are four main components to the deal: a Technical Cooperation Agreement (TCA), a Patent Cooperation Agreement (PCA), and a Business Cooperation Agreement (BCA). There are also specific commitments Microsoft is making to both the contributors of openSUSE Linux, as well as to non-compensated developers (aka "hobbyists").

The BCA provides a platform for joint reserach, marketing and support. 

The PCA provides patent coverage for one another's customers giving them piece of mind regarding IP issues.

Most interesting to me is the TCA.  Under the TCA, Microsoft and Novell will focus on virtualization technology, web services management, and document format compatibility (specifically Open XML). Novell's participation in the Ecma TC45 for Open XML has paid off and they are committed to producing the code allowing interoperability with OpenOffce, and providing this support back to the OpenOffice.org community. Additionally, Novell has agreed to active participation in the Open XML / ODF translator project.

This deal will improve interoperability in heterogeneous environments containing SUSE Linux and windows, as well as between office productivity suites more effectively meeting the needs of our customers. This is not something we could have or would have done without great interaction and feedback from our customers and partners.

To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched.

VP Paul Holman also reiterates the PS3's "processing power" and that it's not really a gaming console as much as an all-in-one entertainment center. He said the PS3 could possibly come with a keyboard and mouse to let users easily access the net or use third-party OSes installed on the machine. Definitely interesting, the way Sony's not completely hating on hacks the way Microsoft is. – Jason Chen

If you're a Linux user and want to get in on all the Microsoft Zune magic—yeah right—here's a way how. The solution involves VMware and allows you to have a virtual machine running Windows inside your Linux, which then lets you run the Zune software to sync up your Zune.

The only catch is that you need to remove your USB 2.0 driver from Linux before you sync, which means you get to transfer all your songs at USB 1.1 speeds. Nice. This isn't optional—as of right now—and if you don't do this you'll get a nice BSOD in your VMWare window for your troubles. Happy Zunixing. – Jason Chen

For those of you who managed to get your hands on a PS3 and not get shot in the process, you're probably itching to use that big ass machine to do some fancy media playback—like Sony's been hyping. The good news is that you can use your PS3 as a media hub, but the bad news is that you'll have to install Linux.

Here's a guide to installing Yellow Dog Linux, the Linux that was designed for the PlayStation 3. It's not too complicated a process, but you'll have to have a USB mouse and keyboard plus some storage to hold the Linux install on. Thanks to the fact that TomTom already runs their GPS devices off of Linux, users can easily make and install their own TomTom GPS builds to make them do whatever they want. So far there's an OpemTom MP3 player, and, well, that's about it.
